Every student in Australia in year 3, 5, 7, and 9 are expected to appear in an annual national assessment in reading, writing, language conversation (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. This test is known as The National Assessment Program-Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). All government and non-government educational authorities have contributed to the development of NAPLAN material. Although NAPLAN is not part of Australian curriculum, NAPLAN tests provide a snapshot of how kids around the country answer a particular set of math and English test questions in one day.
What are the Benefits of NAPLAN?
NAPLAN is a measure through which the government, educational authorities, schools, parents, and teachers can determine whether or not young Australian have literacy and numeracy which is the base of any other learning, and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community. NAPLAN provides information on how students are performing which helps teachers and students to improve the sector the students are poor in. It also gives schools and the system the ability to measure their students’ achievements against national minimum standards and compare student performance across states. NAPLAN tests are one aspect of each school’s assessment and reporting process and do not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance. Students not being allowed to use any electronic devices during their tests, make it completely fair to judge them. They write what they know. NAPLAN does have the potential to shed interesting light on students’ learning at a point of time and offer valuable information about what needs to be done next to improve their literacy and numeracy.
Not only does NAPLAN benefit the educational authorities, teachers and parents, but in some way, it also benefits the students who appear for this test. Students get prepared for this test, making them more capable in literacy and numeracy. As we all know literacy and numeracy are crucial for any basic as well as advanced work that we do in our daily lives.
NAPLAN tests and NAPLAN Results 2017
NAPLAN tests take a long time and involve experts from across Australia. Specialist writers are engaged in developing test questions. Many test items are trialled by small samples of students to inform decisions about which items will be taken in the final test. NAPLAN tests are conducted at schools and are administered by classroom teachers, school deputies or the principal. Students answer to multiple-choice questions (MCQs), which will be scanned and the data is captured electronically.
The data from NAPLAN is collated onto the My School website. The Australian Primary Principal Association does not support the publication of results that allow for intra-school comparisons. Some schools are using the results from NAPLAN on an individual basis when making decisions regarding enrollment. Test results are directly linked to the federal funding agreement with the states.
Although some may criticise this means to judge one’s literacy and numeracy, but this is a reliable means to know student’s true ability and potential. By taking tests in every corresponding year 3, 5, 7, and 9 the government, educational authorities, teachers and parents can well very well how the students well the students are performing. Not being able to use any means of electronic devices for means of calculator defines the student’s numeracy, which is essential for the basic daily purpose.
